5 Terrific Reasons not to use the GPS

The day was still cool and the sun was up that gave the impression of a warm day although still in the midst of a Canadian winter. With a bottle of water in hand and cars keyys in the other it was time to get into the car and drive. No GPS, and an old map that was in the glove box- not to be taken out. It was time to get lost and let the sun be my beacon and compass. I did take my phone I am not a barbarian.

The feeling of freedom

With no boundaries you encounter a  world of free bewilderment, with no barriers to hold you back from the pure enjoyment of “Now”. The open road has no timetable , no stops to make, no predetermined bathroom break, just Kilometers (miles) of open road- your road.

Exploration

I often like to employ the “turn left method” meaning that when in doubt I simply turn left onto whatever road presents itself. This often leads me down a rarely used strip of passage that is often rough, sometimes dirty and always interesting. This is not the highway, this is truly a biway

Adventure

Most times you will come across and old bridge with a brooke running underneath it surrounded by a soon to be apple orchard. Or a covered bridge still surrounded by the last remnants of winters frost. With the car off to the side of the road and the cool wind redends your nose you can walk along the embankments to gain another perspective of a slower tranquil world. On those very special moments you may encounter wildlife in it natural habitat.

Interactions

With no schedule, allows you stop at any town or village to visit their shops and restaurants. Places that you never knew existed are just up there on the left. Speaking with the vendors the local people will give you an opportunity to visit a way of life that may seem foreign and yet very hospitable. A stroll up main street to do some window shopping, maybe a good “find” can be had.

For Yourself

Often times we get bogged down into the trivialities that become our lives. We all need time to re energize to get back that sense of self. We often fall into that i don’t have time or maybe tomorrow. A trip to Asia or Europe may not be in the realm of many people for a myriad of reasons. A day away from the GPS allows you to express yourself in a way that is uniquely you and preserve your mental well being.

Lost and Found

A day on the road without the GPS can bring you intune with many of your senses that may have been buried away during its winter slumber. A time for you and the open road to explore new territory and find some new stomping grounds for adventure. Who knows you may even make a friend or two. As I often say when in doubt “turn left.” Sometimes you have to get lost to truly appreciate what you have found.

I am certain many of you have had some unexpected unchartered road stories that are full of the items mentioned above. Please feel free to drop a line and tell us about your adventure.
