Countries that offer such an array of activities should be on the front page of many travel and tourism brochures, fortunately with Belize this is not the case. With its vast beaches, abundant caving, substantial wildlife, ancient architectural ruins and the second largest Barrier Reef in the world. From a hike in the jungle to relaxing on the beach with a cerveza, yes this too is an activity- like snooker is to sports. Belize has an activity for everyone.

Scuba, Snorkelling

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system is continuous from Cancun on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula through the Mayan Riviera and up to Honduras, making it one of the World’s largest coral reef systems in the world. This makes it ideally situated for some of the best Scuba and Snorkelling that you will find anywhere in the world. With it warm waters,( around 25 degrees celsius) year round, this is an aquatic playground for all to enjoy. Dive shops and tours are bountiful, so be sure to shop around for the most reputable and to a lesser degree price. When it comes to undersea adventure I would prefer to pay a few dollars for to ensure my safety- but that is just me. Many hotels can “suggest” a tour as well. You will find that this is generally a more expensive route, so shop around and meet the people in the dive shops.
Recently the Great Blue Hole has come back into the news. Media mogul Richard Branson has recently embarked on a expeditions to explore this UNESCO protected environment. For the rest of us there are plenty of other amazing sites to explore.

Windsurfing

For those that would prefer to enjoy water sports on the water as opposed to in it, Belize has a cure for that. Because of the barrier reef , the water remains relatively flat , and with a good offshore breeze wind surfing is a sport that is both exhilarating and challenginging. Many schooled persons have managed to “ride” the wind for hours at a time- not yours truly. I find myself spending as much time in the water. With the water that is so clear you can glide along the surface and view the fish below. The fun never stops. However a decent level of fitness may be in order. Either way any time you are on the water is a great day. Contact your concierge for the best places to surf.

Kayaking/ Canoeing

With its unparalleled geography both Kayaking and Canoeing are naturally perfect activities for this environment. The reef make it ideal for sea Kayaking, the protected warm water and offshore breeze make this an experience that you will remember for a lifetime. Many people will bring their snorkelling equipment to become a little more intimate with the environment- I would strongly recommend this, a dip in the water is ideal in under the hot sun. Either in or on top of the ocean this activity is not be missed.
A little farther inland Kayaking and Canoeing adventures are numerous via many inland waterways that Belize has to offer. Paddle your way though some of the lush jungles, through caves and encounter some amazing wildlife both on the shore and in the air. A professional guide can help you with both types of watercraft. Whether you are new or seasoned veteran, Belize and its idyllic waterways is an ideal way to spend the day(s).

Caving

After a day on the water, perhaps it is time for land activities. Belize with its varied topography lends itself perfectly for hiking and cave exploration. There are many caves in Belize primarily due to the abundance of limestone and a wet lush tropical environment. Most have not been thoroughly explored – this adds to the intrigue. You may even come across Mayan artifacts as you explore and wildlife specific to the caves such as crayfish and arachnids. While other caves are not accessible due to either proximity or archaeological significance. As with most cave experiences it is important to have the right equipment, are physically fit  for the adventure. Hire a local guide to ensure that not only is your visit one of memories for a lifetime but one that allows you to share your stories with friends and family.

Hiking Birdwatching

While Hiking, there is an opportunity to view one of the largest collections of birds in their natural habitat. Many areas of Belize are home to select varieties of bird life and have introduced sanctuaries in an aid to help preserve some species.Belize is home to over 500 species of birds- an ornithologists dream. With little industrialization in Belize this allows for a perfect location to view a wide variety of birds and animal life. From the Hummingbird, to the Pelican, the wild life is abundant and yours to enjoy and respect. There are also many ornithological books and pamphlets available to help you identify a species in your area. In most cases the friendly guide will be able to help you.

Archaeological Exploration.

With a Mayan ancestry that goes back to 7000 BC it is important to recognize the different eras of expansion through history. The Maya began to evolve in the areas of Belize in around 350 BC during the El Tajin period or the Classical period in Mesoamerica and Mayan history. Mayan culture reached its zenith during the periods of 250 AD – 900 AD in this region. Mayan ancestry is very evident throughout Belize. These are showcased by the Excavated ruins of Temples and Cities. Although many are available for exploration there are still more are in the process of excavation. Some of the major sites that you should visit if you have the opportunity are:

Cahal Pech: This excavated site is located near San Ignacio. It is estimated that the site was inhabited from 1000 BC and abandoned near 800 AD.

Caracol: Although mostly unexcavated, it is still considered one of the biggest sites in Belize. It is located in the Chiquibul Rain Reserve near San Ignacio.

Lamanai: This ruin is recognized as being one of the longest inhabited ruins in Belize (1700 AD) It is located in the Orange Walk region and is accessible by Road or down the New River by boat.

Xunantunich: Here lays the location of El Castillo, the second largest pyramid (next to Caracol) in Belize. It is also the furthest inland located close to the Guatemalan border. Xunantunich means the “Maiden of the Rock”

While these sites are available for us to explore, examine, educate ourselves and simply enjoy. It is important to remember that these locations must be treated with respect. As it is our duty to help preserve them for generations…Sorry to get preachy, but I do think it is important.

Hard to resist

Belize offers many opportunities to fill your day with a variety of activities. May it be on the sea or having a hike in the Rain Forest there is something for everyone of all ages. No, I did not forget, with many miles of sandy shoreline there is something that is very close to my heart, a beach, some sand and a cold beverage. But I think we all have our own methodology for this, may it be in a hammock or under a cabana. The important thing is to take the time and enjoy. It’s “your Vacation, and Your Escape”, enjoy it your way.
