11 Gifts of Sailing

In everyone’s day week, etc., there comes a time to relax. Of course, this can take many forms. Some like to read a book, and others wile away the days drinking cocktails and cooling off in the swimming pool, sheltering themselves from the hot Costa Rican sun. Any of these are good. For those that feel that these leisure activities have fulfilled their duties and are revving up for more. To you, may I extend this offer with a sunset cruise in Brasilito bay? Come and enjoy the 11 Gifts of sailing.

The Tide was out

Here you can board around 2 pm, and after a few fundamental safety tips and the signing of a waiver, you jettisoned across to a state of the art, very clean catamaran. For those that do not know a “cat” is a two pontoon craft that is very stable and comfortable to sail in. Once all guests were aboard and informed as to where you can stow your personal belongings. Off into the Pacific ocean, you go.

A New way to Chill

Sails unfurled, the ocean breezes catapult this vessel into an eco-friendly touring machine. The crew of four amiable and competent young men go into action to ensure that your stay on board is one to remember. The waves lap under the hull, your “leisurely” adventure underway. With a decent selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments available, this is very similar to sitting by the pool. There is one huge exception; you are in the ocean with the wind in your hair and the warm, almost hot sunshine on your face.

Bring Back the Classics

Off to the right, you begin to see smaller volcanic islands that will leave you thinking of some of the iconic novels of days gone by- Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe or perhaps even Gilligan’s Island. As you begin to leave the shore behind another version of the Costa Rican shoreline begins to emerge with its lush green vegetation as it meets the very captivating coastline

Eco-Speed

Now you feel the hulls begin to lurch as the “cat” jumps to life inhaling the wind as our cruise on top of the ocean becomes more speed boat-like. We begin to understand why the sea has lured so many throughout the ages. After another cerveza, your fellow guests start to join in the celebration and the adventure. As we exit the bay into the mouth of the mighty ocean, our Captain informs us that just ahead in a secluded cove is where we will weigh anchor and disembark to our aquatic activities.

Aww, the taste of water

Many of us went snorkelling with the provided equipment. We prefer to bring our own. You can feel the excitement as most of the fourteen people were ready to dive into what the mate said was “refreshing” water temperature. The definition means different things to many people. To me, this means “coolish or perhaps cold. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although I don’t have an exact number, I would guesstimate a balmy 25 celsius(77 Fahrenheit.) In other words, the water temperature was terrific. Mask and fins on. Splash! Here we were a beautiful cove, with a beach not further than 50 meters away. (80 feet).

Safe for Children and Sea urchins

What is extraordinary with a “cat” is that it can get into shallower water than most monohull sailing crafts, making it ideal for parents with young children to enjoy the water as well. We snorkelled for what seemed to be twenty minutes, but the reality is that it was closer to an hour and a half. I could not believe that time had made its calculated journey so quickly. We have hit the deep in other locations that exhibited much better marine life.

It was not the crystal clear waters of a Carribean Sea. However, it was a fantastic experience as we took the time and spotted some sea urchin, small unidentifiable fish- at least to me and many other rock and coral formations. The inlet was calm, and the ship was well equipped with paddleboards and kayaks for those that may enjoy these activities. It was a great time swimming amongst the sea and all the life it had to offer.

Food is great, Especially when hungry

No sooner did we begin to feel one with our surroundings, did the whistle blow indicating it was time to re-enter the sea craft and to start our next leg of this fantastic afternoon. After a “role call” to ensure we were all accounted for it was time to dry off and prepare for provided lunch. It was a wrap accompanied by fresh fruit and potato chips — ideal after a substantial time swimming. Not to be concerned, there were more than enough for everyone on board; in fact, many people had seconds. Me, I was still enveloped in the beautiful scenery as the anchor was lifted and began to sail gracefully back towards Brasilito harbour.

Transforming

Dry, stomach full, contentment would have to be an understatement. Conversing with our new friends, it was apparent that no matter how you spent your “leisure time” either in the water or onboard, you could sense that everyone was having a great time. We laughed, danced, another Cerveza or two, we were all having a great time. Both young and old were charmed by our surroundings. I want to add that the crew is very professional, and the guests too were mature, so if you had any reservation of taking your children on this cruise, put your mind at rest. The environment became more like a backyard bar-b-cue, where everyone was respectful of one another.

Kissed by the Sunset

Although sailing on a catamaran and swimming in the ocean are two incredible experiences that I would strongly recommend. No one can compete with mother nature. As we trolled back to port, the sky began to change from the rich azure of the afternoon to muted golden colours that spanned the horizon. It must be a primordial behaviour that makes us view such a spectacle with such wonderment. Amazed and mesmerized as the sun began it descend behind the horizon, silhouetting the fishing boats coming home to moor from the days catch. The islands that we viewed earlier began to disappear as the amber light on the horizon flashed into green as the last vestiges of the days’ sunlight we no longer to be seen.

Here I held my partner, kissed her to reaffirm that there is only one thing that I kept as magnificent. The music continued as we finished our drinks while the “cat” moored into the dark ocean with only the lights of Flamingo on the horizon.

Did it have to end?

As we disembarked onto the boats that brought us to the “cat,” we thanked our Captain and crew for the great afternoon. As we left the dinghy, we were all tired and exhilarated at the same time. Witnessing such a magnificent sunset does not happen that often, and sometimes the most amazing things are the magic that is always in front of us.

Not to be missed, you are always welcome
