It takes 10 minutes
For those that may have been following this blog I alluded to the fact that although the Westin made you feel like royalty, it did not showcase the real reason that we left our comfortable abode in North America to enjoy the country of Costa Rica.
We knew it was time to leave and to start to discover. Now don’t get me wrong, we are not Lewis and Clark huddling up the pack animals, preparing to embark on a five-month journey into the wild jungles of this Central American paradise. For us, it was a little more reserved and sedated.
First, we had to find our way off this resort. Now, this may seem silly, comical and almost embarrassing. We had to summons a golf cart to get us to the main gate; otherwise, we were in for an hour walk to get into civilization. Please laugh and chuckle at our expense now. We summoned a ride, asked for directions when we finally made it to the front gate. A quick wave to the security person and we were free.
The Road to Brasilito
Deciding on which way was left, we made our way down to the unpaved shoulder of the two-lane paved roadway. We were told it was a 15-minute walk, again, not Lewis and Clark here, but we didn’t need to be. Many of the passing cars looked in bewilderment at these two passing “Gringos.” I am the gringo. My companion is beautiful in all settings we visit. Making sure we used our scout training to walk towards the oncoming traffic, and we traversed the narrow shoulder until we came to a narrow bridge. Stopping to look around we were here Brasilito a small village on the Gold Coast of Costa Rica. It takes 10 minutes.
Located in Guanacaste province in the north pacific region, and it is affectionately known as “the Gold Coast” of Costa Rica. With a fantastic coastline and pristine beaches, it comprises of three separate regions each not to be missed. They are Playa Conchal, Playa Brasilito and Playa Flamingo. In Playa Flamingo, this is where you will find many of the wealthier homeowners of the region. Each with its unique sand composition and views that do not need to be interpreted by any tour guide.
When Less is More
As we strangers walked into town, the usual stares from those that did not think we belonged there, that lasted only a millisecond. More likely, it was me trying to get my bearings. Understand, this is why we are here. To be In Costa Rica, not just enjoy from the sidelines but immerse ourselves into the culture and countryside. Checking my watch it was a ten-minute walk, and we walked slowly- it is Central America after all.
The road is lined with small hotels and cabins for accommodations, restaurants, a supermarket, a football field and a lovely beach. Here the visitors are welcome to participate in what this fishing village as to offer. The entire town would not be any longer than the 2km as we walked along the road. We looked around and began to explore some of the sights. A football field to indicate what the national game is- football — a vibrant square for locals and visitors to enjoy. Brasilito is known locally as a vibrant seaside community that many Costa Ricans from surrounding areas bring their families here to spend the hot summer weekends.
I tossed my watch.
Brasilito is a village where time can pass you by without you even noticing it. With that in mind, we decided not to fight the Costa Rican vibe. We found a great outdoor restaurant, with magnificent seaside views of the bay. https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g1013693-d1513331-Reviews-Camaron_Dorado-Brasilito_Province_of_Guanacaste.html. Here we enjoyed a cocktail or two and gazed out along the ocean as if we had just discovered it. The roar of the surf as it came rolling along the beach to add a certain mystical feeling that could only be created and captured at that moment. One more cocktail, well sure. Inhaling the environment as to taste the sea air, we noticed that the shadows were becoming long and began to make our way back along with the sun-drenched beach. It takes 10 minutes, but what is the hurry?
Forget what you thought you knew
Walking back to Playa Conchal, locals and other visitors had decided that the day was about to come to an end. They too were on the move to end their busy day on the beach. Passing surfers that were drifting on the ocean’s surface anticipating that last waves of the day. Off in the distance, we noticed a peninsula that we were concerned about, thinking that we may not be able to get around. Here is known as Punta Conchal. Not to worry, here they have created a nice, albeit stone laden well-groomed path on which you can cross over to Playa Conchal.
As the sunset over the back lit mountains on the horizon, we sat quietly on the sand. Shades of orange, red and yellow filled the sky as sparse clouds gave contrast to the fantastic spectacle that we were witnessing. Lowering beyond the horizon, the last vestiges of light of the old day ceased. We were trying to comprehend the tranquility that we had just experienced brought an end to what seemed to be a perfect day in an enchanting land.
For those of you that may enjoy a more tranquil setting, Playa Brasilito may be the place for you. With seemingly endless beaches and a sparsely populated village, here you can immerse yourself in your thoughtful ways. If you are considering this area of Costa Rica, I am sure you will not be disappointed. Familiar with this region or would like to add something? We would appreciate your input for our readers.
